Xanax is the brand name for a prescription benzodiazepine known as alprazolam. Doctors prescribe it to treat anxiety and panic disorders.[1] It works to treat anxiety by affecting levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain.
While Xanax is effective in managing anxiety, it is only intended for short-term or occasional use due to the risk of addiction. Using Xanax regularly or long-term can cause you to develop a substance use disorder. To explain, when used in large doses or recreationally, Xanax can cause a drowsy and euphoric high.
Most people who abuse Xanax seek out “Xanax bars.” These are the highest doses of Xanax available (2 mg). Xanax bars are rectangular and come in many colors, including white, yellow, green, and blue.
Unfortunately, drug dealers often press fake Xanax pills. Sometimes, these pressed pills contain dangerous adulterants like fentanyl. Because of this, you should avoid using Xanax that does not come from a doctor or a pharmacy.
In this article, you will learn:

What is Xanax?
Xanax (alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety and panic disorder. It is only available by prescription and is intended for short-term or occasional use. It relieves anxiety by enhancing the activity of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
The side effects of Xanax include:[1]
- Dizziness, drowsiness, and lightheadedness
- Fatigue and tiredness
- Headaches
- Irritability or changes in mood
- Talkativeness
- Trouble concentrating
- Increased salivation or dry mouth
- Changes in sex drive or ability
- Trouble urinating
- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation
- Changes in appetite and weight
- Joint pain
Xanax is prescribed in smaller doses at first. Your doctor might increase your dose if your anxiety or panic attacks are not being relieved. If you take more Xanax than you are prescribed, you might experience a high.
A Xanax high might cause a sedative effect, euphoria, calmness, and memory loss. Some people engage in strange behaviors while high on Xanax, such as compulsive stealing. You might wake up the next morning unable to remember what happened the night before.
Identifying Types of Xanax Bars
If you or a loved one abuses Xanax, knowing what the bars look like can prevent you from accidentally consuming fake pills. There are white, yellow, green, and blue Xanax bars. All of them are rectangular, which is why they’ve been called “bars.”
The different colors of Xanax bars include:
White
White Xanax pills come in a wide range of doses, from 0.25 mg to 2 mg. Each dosage comes in a different shape, like a circular, oval, or rectangular pill. White Xanax bars are rectangular, have 4 imprints that make them easy to break into smaller pieces, and contain 2 mg of alprazolam.
White Xanax bars are known as “sticks” on the street. Depending on the manufacturer that created them, they might have different words or numbers imprinted on them. For example, they might have “Y21” or “XANAX” printed on one side.
Yellow
Yellow Xanax pills tend to be the generic version of the brand-name. They can come in circles, ovals, or bars. Yellow Xanax bars contain 2 mg of alprazolam and tend to have “R 0 3 9” printed on one side.
On the street, people refer to yellow Xanax bars as “school buses.” Because they are incredibly popular among drug users, there are many fake versions of yellow Xanax bars on the street. In other words, you must be extremely cautious when consuming a yellow Xanax bar that doesn’t come from a pharmacy.
Green
There are several different shapes of green Xanax. You can find oval-shaped, triangular, or round green Xanax pills. There are also green Xanax bars, which contain 2 mg of alprazolam.
Green Xanax bars are referred to as “Hulks” or “green monsters” on the street. The words or numbers imprinted on the green Xanax vary depending on the manufacturer.
Blue
Blue Xanax pills are either 1 mg or 2 mg of alprazolam. The circular or oval-shaped blue Xanax is 1 mg, while blue Xanax bars contain 2 mg. Blue bars tend to have “B 7 0 7” printed on one side.
While blue Xanax bars do not have a popular street name, the 1 mg oval-shaped pills are called “blue footballs” because of their appearance.
Spotting Fake Xanax Bars
If you are not taking Xanax to treat a condition like generalized anxiety disorder, you might be buying the pills off the street. Unfortunately, many Xanax bars circulating in the street are fake and pressed by drug dealers. Due to this, sometimes they contain dangerous additives like fentanyl, as this increases their potency and makes people more likely to come back for more.
Unfortunately, consuming a fake Xanax bar that contains fentanyl can lead to a life-threatening overdose. While the only way to know for sure if your Xanax is real is to get it from a doctor, there are some signs to look out for.
The most common signs that indicate your Xanax bar is fake include:
- No markings of letters or numbers on the pill
- Uneven indentations
- The word “XANAX” is misspelled or unevenly spaced
- The word “XANAX” is flat rather than three-dimensional
- The color of the pill is extremely vibrant or different from the pictures on pill identifier websites
- The Xanax pill does not dissolve in water
- The pills are not approximately 0.5 mg in weight
- When you crush the Xanax bar, it shatters into pieces instead of breaking evenly
- The pill has a chalky residue
If you come across what you believe is fake Xanax, never consume it. Even further, you should seek help from a professional drug rehab center if you are struggling with Xanax abuse.
