Types of Outpatient Addiction Treatment Programs in West Palm Beach

Making the decision to seek help for a drug or alcohol problem is a major accomplishment. Asking for help isn’t easy, and admitting to struggling with addiction is even harder. After you’ve decided to get help, your next step is to figure out which addiction treatment program is right for you.

Outpatient addiction treatment programs in West Palm Beach enable you to continue living your life while also getting life-changing help for your addiction. However, there are three different types of outpatient rehab programs you can choose from: partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and regular outpatient. Understanding what each level of care consists of can help you make an educated decision as to which program is right for you.

Residential vs. Outpatient Rehab

There are two different types of addiction treatment programs: inpatient (residential) or outpatient. Inpatient programs require you to live at the treatment facility for as long as you are enrolled in the program. You are usually unable to work, go to school, or provide care for children while you are in treatment. You may be able to leave the facility for certain reasons or have visitors while you are in the rehab, but you can’t come and go as you could if you were living independently.

Outpatient addiction treatment programs, on the other hand, allow you to have much more freedom. You are able to live at home, continue working, go to school, and even care for your family. This is because outpatient programs only require you to be at the treatment facility during your scheduled therapy sessions.

Residential rehab is best for people with severe addictions or co-occurring disorders, but other people can benefit from an outpatient program. If you have a mild addiction, a supportive home environment, and the motivation to stay sober, an outpatient rehab in West Palm Beach may be right for you.

Difference of Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab

Types of Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Whether you’ve already completed an inpatient program or you qualify for outpatient care, it’s important to understand the different levels of care in outpatient rehab. Listed from most intensive to least, the three different types of outpatient rehab in West Palm Beach are:

  1. Partial hospitalization programs (PHP)
  2. Intensive outpatient program (IOP)
  3. Outpatient program (OP)

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Day Programs

PHP, also referred to as day treatment, is the highest level of outpatient care. PHP can easily be compared to a full-time job because you spend Monday-Friday during the day at the treatment facility but are able to return home at night. They are often called day programs because you spend all day in therapy, similar to an inpatient program, but aren’t required to live in the facility’s housing.

Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP)

IOP is similar to PHP, but it is far more flexible. Rather than spending all day in therapy, you only spend 2-3 hours in therapy, 4-5 days each week. IOP is not as intense as PHP, but it is more restrictive than a standard outpatient program because it requires more hours in therapy each week.

Outpatient Program (OP)

OP, or standard outpatient programs, consist of 1-2 hour therapy sessions that are held 2-3 days each week. OP is the lowest level of outpatient care and is usually reserved for people who have already completed inpatient, PHP, or IOP. It is used to help patients transition from outpatient care to independent living.

Benefits of Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Outpatient rehab allows you to get sober and restore a healthy life without completely disrupting your personal responsibilities. Not everyone can afford to take off of work for several weeks to go to rehab and others have responsibilities that cannot be pushed to the side. Each type of outpatient program has its benefits and can introduce you to a lifestyle of recovery.

A few benefits of outpatient rehab include:

  • Lower cost than residential treatment
  • A higher percentage of services may be covered by insurance
  • Being able to balance school, work, or family with treatment
  • The ability to visit with friends and family as you wish
  • Living in the comfort of your own home

Outpatient programs in West Palm Beach use the same therapies and treatments as inpatient programs do–they just don’t offer the same level of intensity, monitoring, and support.
